What is Dermaplaning?
With a dermaplane treatment, the top layer of dead skin cells and fine facial hairs are carefully scraped away using a sharp scalpel-like instrument. The procedure is a type of deep exfoliation, but without damaging the skin or requiring extensive downtime after the procedure. Dermaplaning is not painful – our skin specialists are trained in the technique to safely and painlessly remove just the dead skin cells and peach fuzz on the face.
Benefits of a Dermaplane treatment
Dermaplaning can give you immediate benefits when it comes to the tone, texture and radiance of your skin. The procedure removes dull, dead skin to reveal the new skin cells waiting in the layers beneath and shaves away the vellus hair on your facial skin. The benefits include:
- Glowing, fresh-appearing skin
- More even texture and tone
- No visible facial hairs
- Improved absorption of skin care products
- Improved application of makeup
How does Dermaplaning work?
The skin is continually growing new skin cells and pushing them up to the surface. The skin cell replacement cycle is about every 4-6 weeks; dead skin cell slough off and new skin cells are revealed. Dermaplaning quickens the exfoliation process by removing the old cells and revealing the new so your skin looks dewy and fresh. Plus, the tiny facial hairs are removed that can impact the smoothness of your skin and application of foundation or other skin products.
What can I expect after treatment?
Dermaplaning can be completed in a short session at our clinic. It usually takes less than half an hour, so you can have it performed on a lunchbreak if desired. After your treatment, you may have a small amount of redness to the skin, which usually goes away within 1-2 days. You should avoid direct sun exposure for 2-3 days as the new skin cells are vulnerable to UV damage. Also avoid chlorine, heat and waxing on the treated areas for a few days. It is beneficial to use moisturizers and rejuvenating skin products after dermaplaning as the absorption is more effective.
Some people notice an immediate brightening of the skin after their dermaplane treatment. For others, the glow is more noticeable one or more days after treatment. To retain the results, dermaplaning should be repeated every 4-6 weeks as skin cells renew.
