Sculptra Aesthetic
Sculptra® is a cosmetic injectable product that stimulates your own natural collagen production to increase overall facial volume, while restoring support, structure, elasticity and moisture content to the skin. The active ingredient in Sculptra is injectable poly-L-lactic acid, also known as PLLA. PLLA is synthetic and NOT derived from animal or human sources (such as cadaver material). The main ingredient of Sculptra® has been used for more than 30 years for medical applications such as dissolvable sutures, and as a medium for administering medication. PLLA is made from lactic acid, a natural substance that is necessary for cellular metabolism. Lactic acid is already present in the human body and is created by the muscles during exercise.
How does Sculptra® work?
The microscopic Sculptra® crystals induce a mild inflammatory reaction under the skin where they were injected. This “triggers” the formation of new collagen – white blood cells surrounding the Sculptra® microcrystals recruit collagen-producing fibroblasts. Collagen production gradually increases, making the volume-enhancing results of the Sculptra® treatment apparent in about four to six weeks after injection. Starting immediately after treatment, the treated areas are massaged for a few minutes to distribute the Sculptra® suspension evenly. Massaging helps to prevent the formation of bumps or nodules under the skin.
There is little or no downtime after receiving Sculptra® injections. Most patients can to return immediately to their normal activities. There may be some redness and/or swelling at the injection sites, but these side effects fade quickly. A cold compress or icepack can be applied as needed to remedy these effects.
When will I see the results of Sculptra?
Immediately after Sculptra® treatment, the area of the face that was injected will appear to be filled out, but this is simply because of the water content in the Sculptra® injection (the Sculptra® micro particles are suspended in bacteriostatic water for injection). This temporary fullness after injection will recede in seven to ten days. The true and lasting effects of Sculptra® treatment can take weeks or months to become evident.
Although the effects of Sculptra ® can take some time to manifest themselves, they can last for two to five years. A recent study conducted by Dermik Aesthetics, the company that makes Sculptra®, found that patients who received three to six rounds of Sculptra® treatment showed roughly a 40 percent increase in facial volume two years after their treatments.
Since the polylactic acid in Sculptra® is biologically inert, there is no risk of patients developing an allergic reaction to treatments. Those prone to keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring, or with a depleted immune system may not be a candidate for Sculptra injections. It is recommended to abstain from taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications (such as aspirin, ibuprofen) and consuming alcohol for a minimum of three days prior to and after treatment.
